Vigilance and service - words which Llantwit Major Surf Life Saving Club can feel proud to follow.

Situated in a quiet area away from the town and busy roads, the Lifeguard club nestles in the heart of the Heritage Coast on one of the best surf beaches on the south coast.

In more than 40 years the club has grown from a small number of young volunteers housed in an RAF packing case, to a club with more than 180 members which has provided continuous voluntary service on the beach.

The club was established in 1963 following concerns over local incidents including drownings. The conditions in the Bristol channel can be treacherous, with a three knot current on the flowing tide, prevailing south westerly winds and the second largest tidal drop in the world.

For a town the size of Llantwit Major the club has achieved outstanding success with national and world honours in major competitions, also three Royal Humane Awards and a Humanitarian Award for bravery following a rescue, all gained by Voluntary Lifeguards.

New technology and new competitions have changed the activity within the club radically over the last 40 years, with a thriving nipper and junior section, senior and master's competitions and the introduction of the surf boat in to the club in 2004. Still at the heart of the club though are the voluntary patrols at weekends throughout the summer.

New members are always welcome for training, patrols, competition or just social. Visit our membership page for details.
